A Curious Spring
I noticed an old mechanical kitchen timer resting beside an iron fruit basket on the counter. It had a notched dial with tiny numbers. I planted my feet firmly and gripped the round knob with both hands, turning it slowly to the right. A steady, deliberate ticking sprang to life inside the metal casing—tick, tock, tick, tock. It felt like a small beating heart. Intrigued by the rhythmic tempo, I leaned over and tapped a gentle counter-rhythm against the curved steel wire of the basket with my mallet. The high ping mingled neatly with the steady ticking, turning the bright kitchen counter into my own little workshop.
