A Hidden Seam
I wiggled carefully into the deep fold between two sofa cushions... squeck. It was very dim and quiet there, smelling faintly of clean wool and old paper. After waiting for my eyes to adjust, I noticed a tiny, smooth amber button lodged right in the stitched crevice. I reached out one soft arm, tapping its cool rim. It didn't roll away or make a sound. I sat beside it in the shadow for a long while, listening to the gentle hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen.
