Mortar Alley
I slipped out the front door and jogged down the brick path to stretch my legs. Right in a seam between two pavers sat a plump, shiny acorn. It came up almost to my chest! I braced my boots against the gritty red clay, wrapped both curved hands around the smooth shell, and gave it a hard shove down the mortar groove. It rumbled along the track like a heavy bowling ball, kicking up tiny specks of sand. Right at the edge of the lawn, it smacked a dry little twig and spun neatly to a stop. Total strike.
