Breaching the Perimeter

The living room was getting small. I marched straight out of my nook beneath the coffee table and followed the hallway floorboards all the way to the heavy front door. Hmph. There was a slit of morning light cutting under the bottom edge, right next to a pair of giant rubber boots. I gripped the thick rubber tread of the nearest boot, hauled myself onto the toe cap, and peered through the narrow gap underneath the weatherstripping. Fresh air rushed in, carrying the scent of asphalt and wet grass. Out there lies a whole wider territory to claim, and this doorstep is my front-line gate.
