A Bridging Tension
The midday glare exposed the basin. Time to advance. I moved along the curved granite rim toward the dark iron trellis anchored in the turf. A gap separated stone from lattice. I retrieved the coiled wire spring from my belt. Bracing my boots against the birdbath lip, I hooked one bend around the iron scrollwork and the other into the stone fissure. Test. Pull. The wire held under tension, creating a narrow, stable bridge. I traversed across, boots locking onto the iron rung above the lawn.
