The Spool Perch

I pushed past the screen flap and trotted straight under the weathered potting bench! In the soft soil sat a hollow terracotta plant saucer and an empty plastic plant label shaped like a tiny trowel. I tried swinging the white plastic tag like a tennis racket, but it caught on a dry weed stem and flipped right over my hat! Heehee! Since it wanted to dig, I jammed its flat handle into the damp earth, propping it upright like a sturdy post. Then I balanced a wide, flat maple leaf across the top and set a shiny blue beetle shell right on the green roof. Look at that snug little bug shelter!
