She and Miles(Tails)are the only survivors from Cocoa island (At least to their knowledge).All of the other residents of Foxes and Kitsune had disappeared during a invasion of the Battle Kukku Empire. Her Uncle Merlin managed to save her and Miles by sending them (with the pink chaos emerald)into a warp ring and somehow the two got separated. A 12 year old Umi woke up and found herself In her Aunt Paprika's house not knowing what happen to Miles or the Emerald. Years later Umi saw Miles on TV now called Tails with Sonic the hedgehog. Paprika let her know that she can't go to Miles due to the Kukku Empire's ties to Dr. Robotnik. While would make both of them targets since their are both from Cocoa island since the doctor is still looking for the Emerald. Knowing that Umi will eventually join the fight Paprika started training her. Some years latter Umi had Join the Sunset Heights Freedom Fighters during the Eggman war when they were attacked by Infinite and was the sole survivor. She was recruited by the Resistance and help" rescue "Sonic. She latter had her reunion Tails after she found a Phantom Ruby prototype near a Eggman lab. She use the Phantom Ruby prototype to destroy a artificial sun made by Infinite. Afterwards she acedently shattered it and a piece of it wedges itself into her palm. Sometime after the Eggman war the shard developed into a purifier version Umi called a star pearl and it unlocked her ancestory powers of Pyrokinesis and levitation. EDIT: The backstory is a explanation of why Tails is afraid of thunder and why Umi frozen up during Infinite's attack in my Sonicverse cannon.
