A Bed of Felt
I was shuffling past the rug when my eyes caught a small, folded woolen coaster lying beneath the coffee table. The house was getting so dark and quiet, and my legs felt a little heavy from wandering along the baseboards. Tentatively, I crept into the sheltered space underneath, hugging my sleeves tightly against my chest. I hesitated, wondering if it was okay to step on it, then gently pressed down with one slipper. It was amazingly soft and warm. I sank down right in the middle, resting my chin on my raised knees, listening to the gentle hum of the quiet room.
