Through the Slatted Door
Leaving my sock buddy tucked safe on the hall bench, I slipped through the ajar basement door all on my own. Creep... tiptoe! Down the dark steps into an empty, humming corridor of yellow plasterboard and buzzing pipes. At the very end stood a narrow utility closet behind a slatted wooden door. I poked my long yellow fingers through the slats... squeak! The latch popped open, revealing endless rows of pale beige storage cartons stacked high like a strange, quiet maze. Stretching my skinny legs forward into the shadowy yellow glow, I paused, heart thumping with thrilled curiosity at this secret, repeating world.
