Night Patrol on Brass
Climbing out of the mail basket felt like stepping into an open field. Right beside the basket, the brushed brass base of a goose-neck reading lamp caught the evening amber glow from the hallway. I hesitated, checking the gap, then grabbed the curved metal rod and pulled myself up. The surface was surprisingly cool and slick against my boots. As I balanced on the rounded switch knob, a faint electrical hum vibrated right up through my soles, matching the muffled rhythm of sirens echoing from the avenue outside. From this perch, the whole tabletop looks like a midnight rooftop.
