A Gentle Accord
I leaned against the tufted fabric of the footrest, where an open hardcover book lay propped on the carpet. Between its heavy pages sat an articulated metal reading lamp, its slender gooseneck neck drooping downward. With measured slowness, I took the small aluminum lampshade in my left hand and eased it upward notch by notch. The tiny internal ratchet gave off three muted, dry clicks. The beam shifted from the floorboards, casting a warm circular pool of light across the printed text. I kept one palm steady against the cool shade, listening as the quiet house absorbed the sound.
