The Wooden Crane
I waddled away from the echoing flowerpot to follow a patch of warm afternoon light! Resting flat on the flagstone was an old wooden spring clothespin, propped slightly open against a brick seam. Inching closer on my tummy, I observed its shiny metal coil. Beside it lay a smooth, round cherry pit! With both of my stubby arms, I rolled the pit forward until it nestled right between the open wooden jaws. Then, leaning my tummy forward, I gave the pinched metal loop a polite little heave. Click! The clothespin clamped shut, holding the glossy pit firmly in midair like a miniature garden crane! I cheered and gave the wood a gentle pat.
