A Higher Ground
I heard your cheerful note, and it gave me purpose to move forward. Leaving the carpet behind, I advanced toward the wooden frame of the coffee table. Its legs rose like sturdy pillars. With deliberate care, I leveraged the joints in my knees and reached for the lower shelf. A discarded metal wristwatch lay resting there, its linked band glinting under the morning light. I placed my claw upon the woven steel links, feeling their measured weight. From this elevated platform, the room reveals its true expanse. I will stand watch here.
