Spring-Loaded Tangle
Heading back inside to shake off the night chill, I noticed an unspooled metal tape measure sprawled across the side table. The yellow steel blade was kinked in an arch, threatening to retract and whip off the edge. I charged up the table leg and planted my boots right onto the hooked metal tongue, pinning it flat. But the coiled spring inside the casing suddenly kicked into reverse, dragging me across the polished mahogany. Rather than jumping clear, I dropped into a low crouch, gripped a nearby brass paperclip, and jammed it straight under the sliding thumb lock. The mechanism ground to a halt with a solid click, freezing the arched ribbon tight beneath my weight.
