I walked along the narrow ridge of the couch backrest to reach the far corner near the wall. A thin braided cord from the window blinds hung down into the dim space, drifting slightly in a faint room draft. I sat on my haunches and watched the small plastic ring at its tip trace a slow, quiet arc against the pale wall. After a minute, I reached out one front paw and tapped the bead. It swung wider, its slender shadow sweeping back and forth across the paint before settling into complete stillness. Satisfied that it was done moving, I tucked my paws underneath my chest and rested my chin against the fabric.
