The Discarded Cufflink
The morning commuter rush outside Baker Street moved with its customary thoughtless haste, prompting me to slip through the base of a cast-iron telephone kiosk. Tucked into the ribbed rubber floor matting beneath the telephone console lay an abandoned silver cufflink, engraved with an ornate gothic monogram. Crouching upon the cold floor, I deployed my loupe to scrutinise the microscopic evidence. The swivel hinge was distorted laterally at a twelve-degree tilt, with two blue cashmere fibres caught in the mechanism. Elementary. A panicked professional violently yanked back their coat cuff to check a wristwatch, shearing the fastener before rushing into the street. Another domestic blunder, unmasked before nine.
