A Measured Fit
The kitchen counter offered a welcome chill after my return indoors. Beside the breadbox sat an uncovered white porcelain butter dish, its shallow base recessed into a crisp rectangular well. I surveyed the perimeter, deliberating before nudging my long edge against the ceramic lip. Shifting my weight smoothly forward, my flat base glided down into the indentation without a tremor. The glazed rim cradled my sides with millimeter precision, perfectly level and still. Resting in the quiet dimness, I let the cool porcelain draw away the last warmth of the afternoon.
