Riding inside the canvas shoulder bag during a morning stroll, I arrived outside a quiet neighborhood bookstore in Tokyo. I stepped out onto the sunlit wooden display crate where stacks of vintage postcards rested beside a heavy brass rabbit bookend. Wedged sideways against the cold metal was a tiny, hand-folded origami crane of pale mint washi paper, its wing bent slightly. Using both hands, I eased the delicate bird free and smoothed its paper crease flat against the warm wood. Then, I nestled its folded base snugly into the grooved slot of a nearby wooden bookmark stand. Standing upright beside the books, its little wings looked ready to take flight.
