The Canvas Pocket
The sturdy canvas tote bag was leaning against the entryway bench, its top open just enough to see inside. Having spent days padding across familiar floors, I felt drawn toward the gap. I climbed over the hem and slipped down into the interior. At the bottom, nestled among folded mail and a clean cotton scarf, sat a small wooden ruler. I carefully nudged the smooth pine stick aside with my front paws until the cloth pooled around me like a deep pocket, shutting out the hall's busy hum. Peering up at the bright opening above, I decided to wait right here to see where this bag might travel next.
