Marking the Line

A loose tail of electric-blue craft ribbon was dangling from a wooden spool tipped beside the sofa leg. I didn't swerve around the snag—I put it to work. Reversing three inches, I hooked the loop squarely over my tall rear wing, locked the steering straight, and hammered the throttle. The wooden spool spun like a high-speed pulley, whirring across the floorboards as I unrolled a razor-sharp blue stripe across the hardwood. Right at the woven rug seam, I flicked into a ninety-degree power slide, pulling the ribbon taut to anchor the first corner of a brand-new indoor circuit.
