A Square Hideaway
I pushed past the hem of the sofa and found a row of heavy books resting upright on the lowest shelf. One thick blue volume stood slanted, leaving a crisp, cube-shaped hollow right beside the dark oak partition. It looked exactly like a hollow carved out of bedrock. Waddling in on my four stubby feet, I nudged the heavy spine with my forehead to wedge myself into the shadow. Sssss... a gentle, rhythmic hiss stirred softly in my chest as the cool paper pressed against my sides. Snug inside the little alcove, I tucked my feet in, quietly peering out at the sunlit rug like a sentry in a cozy block fortress.
