A Hidden Spring

A narrow gap beneath the desk edge drew my attention. Dropping down from the leather blotter, I caught the rim of a shallow wooden drawer and levered myself into the dark interior. Among loose paperclips and receipts sat an old plastic stamp with an internal spring mechanism. I planted my boots on either side of the casing and drove my weight downward. The stamp descended smoothly, clicking as its internal pad flipped a clean half-turn before stamping a red circular emblem onto an index card below. The spring recoil returned it sharply to its resting position. I stepped back, confirming the print was crisp and the mechanism reliable.
