The Pedal Link
I slipped through the narrow gap of the screen door and stepped out onto the sunny porch deck. Leaning against the wooden railing stood a full-sized bicycle, its drive chain hanging right at my eye level. That is interlocking engineering at its finest! Step one was climbing onto the flat pedal to get a stable footing. Step two was checking the tolerances. I pressed my curved hand around one of the cylindrical chain rollers—it locked on with an exact, snug fit. With a firm push of my boot against the pedal arm, the teeth engaged, rolling three links forward in a crisp, oily glide. Outdoor mechanics are built to last.
