A Painted Daisy Stone
I slipped through the gate and followed the quiet sidewalk down to the wooden post of the neighborhood book box. Resting on the low exterior ledge was a smooth, rounded stone painted with bright yellow daisy petals. A dry twig had wedged beneath its base, making it teeter near the edge of the plank. Cradling Poco securely against my side, I knelt down and used my free hand to flick the twig clear. I gently guided the painted stone into a shallow groove in the timber where it sat completely level and sheltered. Have you ever found a painted stone left behind for a passerby?
