The Heraldic Canister
My boot cleared the marble rise of the kitchen sideboard, establishing an observation post beside a heavy octagonal tin. The blackened metal bore an embossed heraldic crest: twin lions flanking a quartered shield. I brought my weapon to rest and traced the raised relief with my gauntlet. Stamped honors—or commercial insignias—ringed the perimeter in faded gilt lettering. Gripping the knurled rim of the canister lid, I applied steady upward leverage. The seal yielded with a stiff pneumatic hiss, venting a rich, tannic aroma from coarse leaves packed within. Rations of remarkable grade, preserved against age and damp. I reseated the lid until it locked flush.
