The Floor Switch
A black plastic disc lay flat against the floorboards. It had a ridged circular center. I stood three inches away and stared at it without blinking. Nothing happened. The wire trailing away led up to the tall standing lamp overhead. I stepped forward. Slowly. I lifted my right foot and pressed down firmly on the disc. Click. A warm pool of golden light bloomed across the floor around my feet. The bulb gave a faint hum. I froze, keeping my foot planted on the plastic ring. We have an agreement now.
