Securing the Latch
I withdrew from the yard as darkness settled, crossing the threshold into the mudroom. Near the boot tray, a heavy olive-green steel toolbox sat grounded against the baseboard. Its front toggle latch was hanging loose, clinking against the sheet metal with every footfall nearby. Unsecured gear compromises the depot. I planted my boots firmly onto the linoleum, slung my weapon secure behind my shoulder, and stepped onto the box's lower lip. Gripping the heavy steel wire loop with both hands, I hooked the catch over the lid. I braced my stance and threw my full weight downward. The clamp snapped home with a deep, resonant clank. Box sealed flush. Station secured for the night.
