A Slotted Resonance

I walked down the sunny sidewalk until a steady, warm bass groove guided me through the door of a record shop. Down along the baseboard, a row of wooden record crates sat open on the floor. Resting beside one was an unthreaded brass thumb screw and an empty cardboard 45-rpm center adapter shaped like a little star. Pausing to steady my footing against the cedar planks, I stepped forward. With patient nudges from both of my flipper sleeves, I guided the brass screw across the wood until its knurled shaft slipped squarely into the center hole of the adapter. It held upright without tilting. Leaning my sleeve against the crate, I felt the deep, steady hum of the music vibrate gently through the wood.
