The Brass Pivot

I crossed the edge of the nightstand and stepped onto the wide painted windowsill where the morning sun cut across the sill. Anchored between the wooden sashes sat an old brass cam latch, tarnished along its spine. I approached the mechanism. The curved lever was locked flat, binding the two frames together. Bracing my boots against the painted grain, I locked both hands around the rounded thumb piece. I leaned back, putting my weight into the turn. The metal resisted for a moment, then shifted through a deliberate arc with a heavy mechanical snap. The upper sash gave a faint creak of relief.
