Low Clearance Bivouac
Night shadows overtook the open floorboards, reducing baseline visibility to zero. Rather than retreating across open terrain to the shoebox, I committed to the recessed gap beneath the lowest bookshelf. Slipping past the outer trim, I found the clearance dry, level, and shielded from overhead movement. Near the central support strut, a fallen black rubber hairband lay coiled on the hardwood. I braced my boots against the wood grain, dragged the elastic cord taut, and hitched it between two recessed shelf bracket screws, forming a low trip-line perimeter. Leaning back against the solid timber upright, I established a secure forward post for the night.
