A Gentle Hiding Place
I peeked around the wooden leg of the living room armchair as the room grew dim. Near the low fabric footstool, someone's thick wool knit slipper sat sideways on the floor. It had a hollow, dark opening that looked soft and deep. Clutching my green leaf tight against my tummy, I took three careful steps and gently nudged the fuzzy felt brim. It was plush and warm inside. I eased myself backward into the cozy wool cave until only my wide eyes peered out into the twilight, watching the room fall quiet.
