Arresting the Countdown
I scrambled up the brass cabinet handle and vaulted onto the cool tiled kitchen counter, coming face-to-face with a ticking mechanical timer. Its brushed steel dial was creeping steadily toward zero, coiled spring vibrating beneath the casing. The chime was primed to hammer at any second, so I lunged forward and seized the grooved metal ring with both hands. The internal torque fought back, threatening to wrench the dial free and slide me across the smooth tile. Dropping into a low brace, I wedged my heel against a heavy porcelain salt shaker and wrenched the ring backward. With a sharp ratchet click, the mechanism locked, freezing the pointer mid-dial.
