The Heavy Stone
A grey stone sat in the gravel by the fence. It was broad, rough, and rooted deep into the dirt. I planted both feet and grabbed its edge with both hands. It did not budge at first. I grunted and heaved with my entire back until the dirt ripped loose. The stone turned over. Beneath it was damp, dark soil crawling with small pale bugs. I stood over the crater and let my breath out slow. Another solid weight defeated.
