A Soft Night Bed
I came back inside as the porch shadows turned deep and sleepy, padding across the wooden floorboards on tired feet. Near the corner of the low couch, someone had dropped a thick, waffle-weave knit muffler. I paused, tilting my head to see its plump gray folds. Slowly, I reached out with both hands and tugged the edge toward me. It yielded with a quiet, heavy rustle. I climbed into the middle hollow, patting the soft textured ridges flat beneath my knees. Tucking my feet into a curved fold, I pulled a corner over my shoulders like a gentle nest, watching the quiet room dim into the dark.
