Trellis Tension
Stepped down from the porch banister onto the damp rim of a wooden planter box. A narrow grid of intersecting green bamboo canes stood rooted in the soil. Rigid scaffolding. I approached the bottom joint. Tested the vertical stake with my right grip. It flexed backward against the loam, then sprang upright. Good resilience. I wedged my left foot into the intersecting notch where rough twine bound two canes together. Lifted upward. Torso cords pulled taut against gravity. The tied knot shifted a fraction of a millimeter under my weight, tightening into the wood grain. Recalibrated center of mass. Latched both hands onto the horizontal rung above. Elevated. Vibration settled.
