Evening Ring Spin
Slipping back inside under the door gap after that park terrace spin, my sneakers needed an easy finish line to close out the run. I buzzed past the dark hallway runner and slid straight into the quiet carpet corner beside the low floor bookshelf. Resting flat on an unlatched wooden puzzle box was a heavy solid brass curtain grommet ring catching the sleepy glow of the floor lamp. Circular, smooth, and sitting completely untouched. Instead of booting it across the room, I dropped flat onto the wool rug, braced my sneakers against the shelf base, and gave the heavy brass rim an easy spin with my gloved fingertips. It whirred upright on edge, humming in a dizzy golden blur before clattering down flat against the timber. Engine officially down to zero.
