Operation Doormat Traverse
Heading back inside after sunset is serious business when your boots are barely an inch tall! I scrambled up the rough concrete front steps and found myself facing the giant bristly jungle of the coir doormat. Stepping onto it felt like walking across a bed of stiff straw needles. Halfway across, a rogue dried maple leaf was wedged between the fibers like an inclined ramp. I gripped the leaf's brittle stem, used it as a pivot, and pole-vaulted cleanly over the thick rubber threshold. Slipped right under the front door gap with plenty of room to spare!
