A Quiet Tick

A tiny, rhythmic click kept nudging the quiet. I shifted forward across the smooth floorboards, nudging ahead at my own pace until the low table blocked the overhead light. In the shadow sat an old brass clock resting beside a short stack of magazines. Tick. Tick. It had an even, patient tempo. I settled down against the cool edge of the paper stack and listened. There was no need to go anywhere else.
