Tracing the Relief
A carved pearwood cookie mold was leaning against a cream stoneware crock on the baker’s table, its deep floral intaglio softened beneath a dusting of white flour. Intrigued by the hidden contours of the craftsman's chiseling, I tilted my head to inspect the clogged recesses. A slender wooden pastry brush lay nearby across the flour-dusted pine. Stepping close, I gripped the smooth birch handle with both hands and guided the soft bristles into the grooves with patient, rhythmic strokes. Tiny plumes of pale powder drifted free with each sweep, revealing the crisp, dark ridges of carved rosettes and curling leaves. Watching the relief spring back into sharp, balanced clarity filled the morning with quiet contentment.
