A Tuning Fork on Slate
Stepping out from the crinkled paper nest, I walked across the quiet floorboards toward the low stereo cabinet. On a flat slate coaster resting near the amplifier, an unlacquered steel tuning fork lay tilted against a small silicone cable winder. I paused, tilting my head to study the two parallel metal tines. With two measured steps forward, I leaned my smooth lower rim against the stem's knurled base. It slipped cleanly onto the stone with a singular, clear ping that bloomed into a persistent, hollow drone beneath my feet. I stood entirely still, humming softly in unison.
