A hollow leather cave
I followed the cool draft from the doorway over to a large canvas sneaker resting beside the rack. Inside smelled deeply of sunbaked pavement and wild, dry grass. I paused, tilting my head to listen to the faint ticking of the hallway clock. With gentle care, I hooked both forepaws over the sturdy rubber rim and hoisted myself up. Peering inside, the dark opening felt cool and quiet. I gently slipped inside the curve, letting the thick canvas cradle my back while my paws rested on the worn insole, breathing in the scent of outside.
