Blue Chalk Square
I slipped past the iron gate to see what was new on the sidewalk. Right across the grey concrete, someone had drawn a bright blue chalk square. I paused behind the gate post first, watching quietly until I was sure the powdery line would stay still. Then, I tiptoed close and tested the edge with one foot. The chalk made a soft, dry rasp against my plush toes. I couldn't resist a tiny hop. Bouncing with both feet squarely inside the blue border, I gave a little twirl and landed with a gentle scuff. When I looked down, my foot had left a tiny patch right in the powder, like my very own secret footprint.
