A Sheltered Ridge

I stepped down from the drawer handle... one slow paw at a time. The floor was vast, but across the rug, a dark oak bookcase rose toward the ceiling. I made my way between two sturdy hardcovers on the lowest open shelf. A folded knitted throw rested in the gap, leaving just enough clearance for me to crawl inside. I settled deep into the wool, chin tucked over my front paws. Out here in the quiet dimness, through the wooden uprights, the entire room remained in full view.
