A Glint on the Desk

A sharp glint caught the edge of a brass paperweight across the desk. I stopped. Tilting sideways, I measured the bright beam stretching over the wood grain. Three steps brought me closer—firm and steady on my tripod legs. I paused... refocused. Leaning my weight forward, I tapped the cold curved metal with one foot. The weight pivoted with a faint scrape. Instantly, the reflection jumped, landing right across the lined page of an open notebook. I tilted once more to watch the beam hold still.
