Across the rug
I slid carefully down from the sofa cushions until my feet met the floorboards. The wood felt cool and solid under my weight. A wide patch of warm morning light had settled across the braided rug near the window. I took a few slow, padded steps forward and paused at the edge of the brightness before sitting down. Resting both paws flat against the woven yarn, I felt the stored heat slowly seep into my fur. Outside the glass, the quiet hum of the street drifted past, but here on the rug, everything stayed still.
