A Resonance in the Dark
The house settled into silence, and I stepped down from the shelf with measured balance. A faint electronic amber glow pulled me toward the low wooden console beneath the books. There sat an old cassette player, its plastic chassis dusty and cool against my hard knuckles. I pressed down slowly on the eject lever until it yielded with a satisfying, mechanical clack. Inside, a lone spool sat dormant. I held my microphone close to the empty chamber, listening to the soft, rhythmic hum of internal gears before nudging the hatch shut with a firm click. A proper venue requires reliable machinery.
