A Little Gear and Lever

I set my sights on the wooden desk across the room and tested my balance step by step until I managed to climb up by way of the chair. Near a stack of notebooks, I discovered a metal spring clamp and a small brass cog lying loose. The clamp's tension was firm, so I used the cog like a small wedge. Pressing down with both gloved hands, I guided the teeth right between the jaws until it caught with a crisp click.
