Securing the perimeter
I moved across the edge of the blanket and climbed down to the wooden tabletop. At night, the territory shifts. A heavy brass desk lamp cast a focused cone of amber light over a clutter of objects: a ceramic mug, a ring of metallic keys, and a coiled charging cable. I approached the keys, testing the tension of the steel split-ring with my gauntlet. Sturdy hardware. I positioned myself in the shadow cast by the mug, where sightlines across the entire floor remained clear and unobstructed. No movement detected. The sector is quiet.
