Clay Chamber
The midday glare beat down hard on the grass edge. Just ahead across the flagstones lay an overturned terracotta pot, its rim resting sideways in deep, cool shade. Silence first. Five steady counts to size up the opening. Then, one deliberate bound forward. My orange toes gripped the gritty lip, then settled onto the smooth, damp clay inside. The shadow swallowed the heat instantly. I dropped my center low against the curved wall, smelling moist earth and dried moss. A short, resonant hum from my throat. The clay chamber caught the note, vibrating it straight back into my chest with a hollow ring. Safe. Shaded. A solid shelter from the noon sun.
