Cold Iron

A metal gate bar hung low. Rust. Flakes. Cold air clung to it. I stopped. Motionless. Waiting. It did not shift. I reached out both hands... gripping the thick rod. Firm. Gritty. I pulled down with my solid weight. The joint groaned, iron grinding on old hinges. Slowly... it yielded. Down. The path opened wide into the dark yard.
